DIII Interview 6. Inappropriate emphasis on winning over development
Karl Avdek interviews Steve Gruenberg, pitching coach and recruiter at DIII Kenyon College
Steve Gruenberg has been a DIII coach for eight years. He is incredibly intelligent and astute on the differences and opportunities afforded to student athletes at the DIII level.
In European soccer and Canadian hockey; long term development is what is important. In many domestic programs; especially in "travel" baseball, there is what SOMETIMES an inappropriate emphasis on winning over development. Each individual player is different but now matter who the player is; they are ALL developing; and all at different rates. In the final analysis players are chosen by collegiate programs INDIVIDUALLY and therefore need to be in programs that are appropriate for them.
